Joan Hambidge - Lady Gaga (Translated by Douglas Reid Skinner) [Poem]

Douglas Reid Skinner
Lady Gaga
Joan Hambidge

“Do what you want

with my body,” she taunts,

this pale imitation Marilyn.

Sometimes she even wears a meat dress

that looks like Parma ham

hung in a real Italian restaurant.

She shows how raw her inside looks,

this modern phenomenon.

Indeed, flesh bulges out, warns Lacan,

character’s expressed by the body.

Perhaps Marilyn and Madonna cross-bred?

But authentic in her mimicking

of other icons, she even performed
Julie Andrews’s songs from
The Sound of Music on an Oscar night.
What shall we do with this problem
called Lady Gaga?
Is she simply cracked, a crazy,
or a true emblem
that exaggeratedly
rides with bearing reins?
Let’s not pluck out her tail feathers:
Lady Gaga the copycat
is unique and precious:
so, no salt on her feathers,

she’s one for the connoisseur.

Joan Hambidge - Lady Gaga [Gedig]

Lady Gaga
Joan Hambidge

"Doen wat julle wil
met my lyf", tart sy
'n Marilyn-konterfeitsel.
Soms dra sy selfs 'n vleisrok
wat lyk soos Parma-ham
opgehang in 'n egte Italiaanse restaurant.
Sy wys hoe rou haar binneste lyk,
dié moderne fenomeen.
Vlees stulp uit, waarsku Lacan immers,
jou binneste klont op jou lyf.
Marilyn dalk geteel met Madonna?
Dog outentiek in haar nadoen
van ander ikone, vertolk sy
selfs Julie Andrews se songs uit
The Sound of Music op 'n Oscar-aand.
Wat sal ons doen met hierdie probleem,
genaamd Lady Gaga?
Is sy bloot krieselrig, 'n gaga,
of 'n ware embleem
wat in oordrywing
met springteuels ry?
Laat ons nie haar stertvlere uitpluk nie:
Lady Gaga die na-aper
is uniek en kostelik:
so geen sout op haar vere,

sy is iets vir die fynproewer.
